Paper sizes explained

A4 vs US Letter: which printable colouring file should you use?

The two sheets look similar, but they are not identical. Matching the PDF to the paper in your printer protects the artwork and its margins.

Quick answer: A4 paper uses the A4 PDF; 8.5 × 11-inch paper uses the US Letter PDF; tablet colouring uses an individual PNG. Every Rook & Rafter collection includes all three options.

A4 and US Letter measurements

PaperMillimetresInchesCommonly used
A4210 × 297 mm8.27 × 11.69 inAustralia, UK, Europe and much of the world
US Letter215.9 × 279.4 mm8.5 × 11 inUnited States, Canada and some nearby markets

A4 is slightly narrower and taller. US Letter is slightly wider and shorter. That difference can make a printer scale the page or warn that some content is outside its printable area.

Which PDF should I open?

  • If the packet says A4, open the A4 PDF.
  • If it says Letter, US Letter or 8.5 × 11 in, open the US Letter PDF.
  • If unsure, check the printer tray or paper-size menu.

Your country is a clue, but the paper physically loaded is what matters.

Best settings for either size

  1. Select the correct paper size.
  2. Keep portrait orientation.
  3. Try Actual size or 100%.
  4. Inspect the preview; the full border and roofline should remain visible.
  5. If necessary, choose Fit rather than allowing the edge to crop.
  6. Print one test sheet.

Why not one universal PDF?

A universal PDF can be scaled, but automatic scaling may make artwork smaller than necessary or shift margins. Dedicated A4 and Letter editions give each page a deliberate fit while preserving the complete house, roofline, planting and frame.

What if I choose the wrong edition?

Nothing happens to the source file. Cancel the print, open the other PDF and try again. If already printed, check that no roof peak, border or detail was cut off.

Avoid borderless mode: it often enlarges a page slightly so ink reaches the edge, which can crop linework. Standard printing with the supplied safe margins is the better default.

Can I print a PNG?

Yes. A PNG is useful for one page at a time. Set the correct paper size, preserve the image proportions and avoid stretching it to fill the sheet.

What about iPad colouring?

Paper size is irrelevant digitally. Import the individual PNG and follow our iPad and tablet guide.

Both paper sizes are included.

Print on the standard paper used where you live without rebuilding the artwork.
